SKATE FREE: MIAMI OPEN ‘21
Growing up as a kid, not many understood my obsession with this thing called “skateboarding”… People in school would call me names because I’d wear skinny jeans held together with a shoelace belt, my parents always thought I was wasting my time, & strangers would assume that I was simply just up to no good when they saw me that “piece of wood”...
I bring all of this up because fast forward now to the year 2021, skateboarding has evolved into a multi billion dollar industry that has made its way to streets & parks all over the world! From the Olympics in Tokyo to that contest being held at your local skatepark, there is no denying that skateboarding has recently gained a new respect for itself in sports, but has always had a major influence in so many things ranging from art, music, & even fashion ever since it was introduced back in the ‘60s & ‘70s!
This past weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the second annual Miami Open Skate Contest & Bowl Jam presented by Skate Free FL at Lot 11 Skatepark which is located in Downtown Miami, Florida. Skaters of all ages & all kinds came from all over to throw down some of their best tricks! As a skateboarder myself, it was like being at Disney if not better. The contest was broken down into two days, categories for both women & men, some skating the street course, while the rest skated in the bowl jam.
The sound of boards getting clapped on the ground in celebration, the “snail trails” left behind by these determined skateboarders, & the weather being perfect aside from what our iPhones were telling us… Just a few of the many great things that went down at the Miami Open so with that being said... I want to give a major shoutout as well as a huge thank you to all the good folks over at Skate Free FL & Lot 11 Skatepark for everything they've done to grow & expand the skateboarding community down here in the 305!
And since it’s always been a dream of mine to combine my passion of photography with my love for skateboarding… here are some pictures I snagged from this past weekend! Congratulations to all of these amazing skateboarders & I hope to see you all out there again next year!
